on bayt

Andrea Shaker
Description

on bayt is an exhibition of still + moving images and written word. The exhibition is comprised of 16 framed platinum palladium prints on paper, 30 small platinum palladium prints on vellum, along with three (silent) moving image pieces (playing on small monitors).

A catalog accompanies the exhibition and includes a curator’s statement, artist statement, a poem written by Andrea Shaker and a small selection of the images which are in the exhibition. The exhibition space has a sitting area for visitors to sit and read the catalog.

The relationship between still and moving images speaks to the physiology of intergenerational memory and the body in relation to home, homeland and diaspora.  Through image and word on bayt speaks to how the body carries memories as it moves through domestic spaces, and how images of domestic spaces, absent the body, reflect historical narratives and collective memories.

The images in this series were taken by Shaker in Beirut, Ma'asser el shouf and Sawfar, Lebanon
